Not Just Any Cat – The Cat

At The Cat Shelter, we know you’re not just searching for any cat — you’re searching for the cat, the one who belongs with you. And we get it. We’re just as intentional about finding the (italicize the) people for our cats. Every adopter has their own unique personality and lifestyle – just as our cats do.

That’s why we take the time to learn about both. Our goal is to create matches where everyone thrives—whether it’s pairing a gentle soul with someone who wants a quiet cuddle buddy, or introducing a spirited feline to an adopter ready for a playful partner.

You’ll find all the adoption details below, and if you have questions, we’re only an email away: ahcatadoption@gmail.com.

At The Cat Shelter, our commitment to every cat lasts a lifetime—even beyond adoption. We understand that sometimes things don’t work out, and that’s okay. If you encounter challenges, let us know, and we’ll do our best to help. If rehoming becomes necessary, we ask that you return the cat to us so we can ensure their continued care and well-being. Adoption is just the beginning of your new journey— and we’re here to support you and your cat every step of the way.

*It costs us around $350 to provide each cat with the essential vet care and preparation they need for a happy, healthy start in their new home. If you’d like to pay it forward—by covering the full cost of your cat’s care or with helping another cat find a home—any extra donation is truly appreciated!

Our Adoption Process: What to Expect

We want your adoption experience to be welcoming and comfortable, and all about finding the right fit—for you and our cats! Here’s how it works:

Start with a Warm Welcome & Adoption Application
When you arrive at The Cat Shelter, our friendly staff or volunteers will greet you and help you get started. You’ll fill out a short Adoption Inquiry Form, which helps us understand what you’re looking for so we can guide you to the best match.

Meet the Cats
Once you’re ready, it’s time to meet the cats! Whether you stop by during open hours or schedule an appointment, our team will introduce you to our wonderful feline friends and answer any questions you may have. Take your time getting to know them—observe their personalities, ask about their quirks, and see who tugs at your heart. Click here to schedule an appointment.

Make It Official
When you find “the one,” we’ll walk you through the next steps, ensuring you have everything you need for a smooth transition. After finalizing the adoption, all that’s left is to bring your new companion home! Be sure to have a secure carrier (or purchase one from us) for a safe and comfortable journey.

Need More Time Before Pickup?
We offer post-adoption holds for up to three weeks:

  • First week: Free to give you time to prepare.
  • Additional weeks: $25 per week, up to a total of three weeks.
  • Special circumstances? Let us know—we may be able to hold your cat longer!

🐾 Foster-to-Adopt Option: In some cases, a foster-to-adopt arrangement may be available—just ask!

Adoption Hours, Location, and Requirements

Our shelter is located at 2151 59th Street, St. Louis, MO. 63110

Our adoption center is open for walk-ins during the following hours:
Wednesday & Thursday: 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Sunday: 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests arriving late in the afternoon may need to return the next day to complete the process.

Adoption Requirements:
Adopters must be 21 years of age or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian (exceptions may be made under special circumstances, just ask us.)

We do not adopt cats to people who plan to declaw them. Here’s why:

  • Declawing is illegal in St. Louis County and City.
  • It’s inhumane and unnecessary.
  • Seriously, don’t even get us started.

*Our priority is the well-being of our cats, so we reserve the right to decline an adoption if we believe it’s not the right fit.
